The Uniqueness of the Prophetic Prints™ Line
Prophetic Prints™ are original designs using handcrafted calligraphy to render the ancient Biblical Hebrew text and English translation. Since 1991.
How did we choose the name “Prophetic Prints”?
Back in 1991 I was watching a TV interview about the regathering of the Russian Jews back to the Land of Israel. The interviewer had been speaking with an Israeli spokesman, who later became prime minister. The interviewer stated that this “ ‘regathering’ was not a matter of politics, but the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy!” I then exclaimed, “I should make a prophetic print about this regathering of the Jewish people from the four corners of the earth back to the Land and give it to the interviewer and the spokesman. A month later I began to teach myself Hebrew calligraphy; I had taught myself English calligraphy a few years prior, having done wedding invitations and other custom work.
I had a thought about creating prints that reflected an open Hebrew/English Bible with a ribbon down the center. I wanted to focus on verses that would touch upon the common human condition: Fear, brokenheartedness, needing help in trouble, being fatherless, etc. At that time, I thought that “Biblical prophecy” mainly meant “foretelling” (telling the future) and “proclaiming truth”; I then learned that “prophecy” also meant to “comfort, edify and encourage.” (1 Corinthians 14:3). The “Prophetic Prints” would therefore include comfort verses.
I created samples. We visited a prestigious Christian college’s bookstore hoping to show the prints. People began selecting them before the store priced them! Twenty nine prints were sold. Then, I was in my first art show in 1992. I did not realize how sophisticated these art shows were in terms of the way the booths were decorated. I came with some sheets to cover the tables! My embarrassment soon turned to encouragement as my booth was crowded; people were asking questions about the rationale for the artwork. People were speaking with each other. People were fellowshipping and praying. I sold the most out of all the vendors at the art show!
Back to the original idea of making a “prophetic print” for the men I had heard on TV. In 1993, an idea literally popped into my head. Shape a world map using the verses of Scripture that have to do with the Jewish people returning to their Land from the four corners of the earth. I studied the hundreds of relevant passages from the Scriptures for several months and selected twenty of these. Laying out the passages to fit each continent involved a lot of trial and error. NO computer was used. The project took two years. Finally when I was ready to have my work printed, I found a top color separator. The color separation process should have taken about half an hour. We learned from the owner of that company that The Prophetic Regathering of Israel’s color separation (into films for printing) took 22 hours! –the longest any piece of artwork’s color separation had taken in the long history of their company. Their computer had interpreted each letter as a piece of artwork!
In 1994, “The Prophetic Regathering of Israel” was ready. Yes, it was sent to the TV interviewer. Yes, it went to the spokesman who had become the Prime Minister of Israel! Yes, it went to a Pulitzer prize winner who wrote us that he was making space in his office at the New York Times for it! A writer for the Boston Globe said nothing like it was hanging there; he gladly received that print and inquired if I would do a custom piece in honor of his newborn son.
The Prophetic Regathering Of Israel lithograph was presented to the captain of a Swedish ship that was dedicated to bringing Jewish people back to Israel from the former U. S. S. R.. The head of the Christian Embassy in Jerusalem requested one for his office. The mayor of the oldest city in Israel was presented one, as were two prime ministers!
Three hundred fifty Christian bookstores nationwide, as far as Alaska, have carried my prints. Several Hallmark stores and galleries have purchased them for their customers. Why should I be surprised? The prints are simply the Word of God in artistic form and thus attract people from across religious and socioeconomic lines because the Word of God is for everyone!
One of the most touching stories to relate is of a call we received from an African American man who had been living in a homeless shelter. He saw our “I Know the Plans I Have for You, saith the LORD, Plans for Peace and Not for Evil, to give you a Future and a Hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) print in the window of a Christian bookstore in California. He got our phone number from the owner of the store and called us. He said as soon as he had the money he wanted to buy it. Needless to say, we sent him a box of prints! We were filled with joy that our work could encourage a person in pain!
People who have no faith at all, people who were widowed or suffered some loss, have written me how they have displayed these in their homes where they could see them every day and receive comfort!
Our Isaiah 53 print and Jeremiah 31 print were designed to show the connection between the prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures about Yeshua the Messiah and their fulfillment in New Covenant (Testament). These were meant to be a teaching tool from both perspectives: Christians would see their Messiah’s Jewish roots. They would see that the New Covenant was a Jewish covenant. Jewish people would see that Jesus of Nazareth (Yeshua) was one of their own! Both would see from the Jeremiah 31 print the connection between the Cup of Redemption (Passover) and the Communion cup…the connection between the Law given to Moses, and the newer covenant where the Living God would write His Word on our hearts…and we would know Him, not just be forgiven by Him.
There is so much more to share with you. For seventeen years the prints have been out there…touching lives from all walks of life all around the world. We welcome you to this site with the hope that the accompanying blog will increase your knowledge of the great riches contained in the Word of God. As Psalm 19 speaks of the Scriptures, “…more to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. For by them is Your servant warned, and in keeping of them there is great reward.”
